If you think that symmetry is boring and obvious and you opt for more unexpected and abstract designs, then try this projects

1. Lets start with a typical pattern, the cross pattern.
2. Select some fabrics, for example a white, a black and a patterned. The patterned fabric was hand-dyed with tie and dye method, but you can use any other patterned or striped fabric.

4. Lay the squares, one on top of the other, with their edges aligned. Sew 1/4 inch (5mm) from the edges by machine. With the roller cutter, cut diagonally both pieces, creating four triangles.

6. Cut the small triangles that exceed from the squares. Arrange the squares, to give the shape of the wind mill. Sew the pieces together creating a larger block of  about 5 1/2 inch (14cm) wide. The block includes the seam allowance.

Converting the cross into an abstract composition.
You can modify almost any boring patchwork pattern into an abstract and unexpected composition. Let's see how this can be done. Add triangular fabric pieces next to the block edges converting the square into a diamond.

Turn the diamond at 45 degrees.

With the roller cutter, cut the pieces into narrower strips.

Rearrange the strips and sew them together.
