Bargello needlework- Flame stitch motif- Beginers tutorial

Traditional Bargello pieces incorporate a series of vertical stitches. The following pattern is one of the most common Bargello, flame patterns with vertical stitches of four threads. The colors are only indicative and you can use the color scheme of your choice. You can also use more colors. 
This project is easy, suitable form beginners in Bargello embroidery.

1. Bring the needle up through hole (1) and then bring the needle down through hole (2) making a vertical stitch of four threads.

2. Bargello patterns are formed when vertical stitches are offset vertically, usually by two threads (halfway up a unit of four threads). So, bring the needle up through hole (3) and then bring the needle down through hole (4).

3. Make two more stitches of 4 threads, stepping up 2 threads every one stitch.

4. Step up two threads, and make two vertical stitches, one next to the other.

5. Step up two threads and make three stitches, one next to the other.

6. Step up two threads and stitch two vertical stitches, one next to the other.

7. Stitch four vertical stitches, stepping up two threads every one stitch.

8. You've reached the top edge of the motif. Now you have to start stitching downwards.

9. Continue stitching, until you finish the first flame motif.

10. Stitch more motifs, one next to the other.

11. When the first row is finished you can start a second row. Pick another color of a similar tone.

12. Stitch another row, picking a lighter color.

14. Stitch another row picking a fourth color.

15. Stitch more rows, keeping the same sequence of colors.

16. Stitch the empty areas on top and bottom.
